These techniques are processor heavy and your computer may struggle to complete them (especially the content-aware tool) but, still, good skills to have and know. Please take some time to familiarize yourself with them, but you are NOT required use them in your music video

Cut out an object with masks

Learn how to create a layer mask using the Pen tool to cut out an object from its background.

Create a freeze frame of the frame used for the cutout

  1. Move the current-time indicator to the frame where the element to isolate looks the best.

  2. Select the layer to freeze in the timeline.

  3. Choose Layer > Time > Freeze Frame.

Use the Pen tool to cut out the element from its background

  1. Select the Pen tool from the Tools panel in the upper left.

  2. Add points at the key points around the object, eventually clicking back on the first point to close the mask. (Click to add a point; click and drag to add a point and draw out handles.)

  3. Adjust the anchor point positions and handles to fine-tune the placement of the mask.

Tip: Option-drag (macOS) or Alt-drag (Windows) a handle to break the handles and have each handle move independently on either side of the anchor point.

What you learned: How to isolate an element from its background with the Roto Brush tool

Create a Roto Brush selection

  1. Make sure the resolution and fast preview options are set to Full quality.

  2. Double-click the video layer in the Timeline panel to open it in the Layer panel.

  3. Select the Roto Brush tool from the Tools panel.

  4. Paint inside the object you want to isolate.

  5. Change the duration of the span to set the duration for the Roto Brush.

  6. Press Alt (Windows) or Option (MacOS) and paint over areas of a selection to remove those areas from the selection.

  7. Press the Spacebar to start and stop the analysis, and make changes to the selection as needed.

  8. Adjust the Roto Brush Matte options in the Effect Controls panel to fine-tune the selection.

Tip: Use the 1 and 2 keys on your keyboard to move up and down the timeline a single frame at a time. Once you have a satisfactory Roto Brush selection, press the Freeze button in the Layer panel to save it.

 

Remove unwanted elements with Content-Aware Fill

Mask out the pixels to remove

  1. Preview the video clip. Then stop playback, and position the current-time indicator to the start of the video clip.

  2. With the Pen tool, draw a mask around the object to be removed, and set the mask to None.

  3. Track the movement of the object using the mask tracker, and then set the mask to Subtract.

  4. Choose Window > Content-Aware Fill to open the Content-Aware Fill panel.

  5. Set Fill Method to Object, and set Range to Work Area.

  6. Click the Generate Fill Layer button to generate the fill.

  7. Deselect all layers, and press the Spacebar to play back the results.
