Overview:

Film production is a demanding course. You will learn and develop your filmmaking skills through the creation of projects. You will be involved in the entire process of filmmaking from inception to completion. This means you will be taking on a variety of roles: writer, producer, storyboard artist, director, actor, gaffer, cinematographer, audio technician, editor, soundtrack composer, effects artist, etc.

While some film analysis is done in the class, this is primarily a production course. You will be regularly and actively engaged in the creation of film projects. There will be 4 major projects throughout the year, supplemented by smaller assignments, exercises, and lessons that will provide opportunities to refine your skills. As your skills progress you will hone and refine your filmmaking talents.

Course Description:

Film I provides an introduction to understanding developing effective film language. Through analysis and critique, students learn to effectively tell a story with image and sound using film language and established story structures. Students work individually and in groups to write, develop, and produce experimental, narrative, and documentary film stories. Stories are written and developed in class through pitch, student presentation, and storyboard. Stories are produced on location using DSLR cameras, professional lights and remote sound equipment. Students learn basic editing skills using industry standard technology. Film I introduces students to film theory through readings, screenings and student presentations.

Equipment Checkout:

We have lots of great equipment at Freestyle. However we have even more students. You MUST return equipment when it is due. Part of being a filmmaker is planning, scheduling, and returning your equipment rentals ON TIME. Your ability to properly manage and care for school equipment will be a factor of your grade. If you break it or lose it you replace it.

No personal equipment is required for this course. Personal devices may be used as well so long as they meet the technical requirements for the course. Cameras and computers must meet the proper specifications.

Grading:

The film industry relies heavily on making and meeting deadlines. Your ability to make and meet these deadlines will be a factor into your grades.

Assignments and projects are broken down into points. All semester grades are final, and will not be changed once submitted for report cards.

Content:

Remember that everything you create also represents Freestyle Academy and the MVLA school district. All your projects are published online. Films must be school appropriate.
