Discussions Rubric
About Discussions:
High-quality contributions to discussions are necessary and expected. Contributions should ideally occur multiple times each week as posts and responses become available, others’ posts are expected (3 or more posts per week are required - 1 original and 2 responses). Contributions that are limited in scope, subject matter, quantity, or quality will not be considered and/or earn full points. Contributions may be made at any time of the day prior to the deadline for that module.
Length
The length of the post is not the most important consideration for purposes of grading. However, very short posts or very long posts will receive lower grades. Posts should be of somewhere between about 100 and 200 words. Responses can be shorter (50-100 words). Make an important point, but make it fairly quickly. Discussion boards are not the place to prove you can write at length, but neither are they places where very short or text-style messages are appropriate.
Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling
Adhere to the same rules and standards for grammar, punctuation, and spelling that would be expected in a formal paper. Abbreviations, smileys, text-speak, and other informal writing characteristics will negatively affect the grading of your post.
- Posts should include engaging comments or questions which lead to continued dialogue among the participants.
- Posts must demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of assigned reading(s).
- Responses need to be address the original post and not be limited to “I agree” or “great idea”.
- Responses should offer continued/newdifferent perspectives for the participants to consider and encouraged dialogue
- Participation must be timely and on a weekly schedule (Posts by Wednesday, 9:00PM, responses by Friday 9:00PM).
- While late posts might be necessary due to circumstances, more than 2 per semester will receive zero points.
- Posts and responses must be well-written, incorporating proper grammar, spelling, and sentence structure.
Academic Integrity violations (including use of AI, internet searches, etc) will receive a failing grade and will be reported to MVHS Administration according to MVHS Academic Integrity Policy Links to an external site.
